Leaderships in Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries
Leading by Examples
The congress theme for the 4WSFC AFRICA, ‘Leading by Examples: Leaderships for Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries,’ recognizes the many examples, lessons and experiences that individual, communities, governments, inter-governmental organizations, and other supporting institutions have in the efforts to build and enhance capacity for sustainable small-scale fisheries. The focus on “leaderships” is a tribute to the immense progress that has been made in the past decade by all sectors, in elevating the profile of small-scale fisheries and in advancing understanding about them. It is also meant to inspire more actions and collaboration to continue to promote and support small-scale fisheries.

While many of the challenges facing small-scale fisheries in Africa are common in other regions, some are unique, requiring innovative solutions at local, national and regional levels. In addition to exchanging knowledge and lessons about what works well and what needs further consideration in securing sustainable future for small-scale fisheries in Africa, the congress offers a platform for deliberation about how to integrate small-scale fisheries in the discussion about Blue Economy, keeping in mind principles such as social justice, gender equity and others promoted in the SSF Guidelines.
Through interactive sessions and discussion, and with an aim to strengthen existing collaboration and build new partnership, the 4WSFC Africa congress will be organized around six main topics, to demonstrate how existing and potential leaderships in small-scale fisheries can lead to better mutual outcomes.

We invite participation from fishers and fishing communities, industry, government and intergovernmental organizations, financial institutions, civil society, and academia, interested in small-scale fisheries sustainability in Africa. We encourage delegates from around the continent, as well as some international researchers working in Africa, to join the congress ‘in-person’ in Cape Town. While we anticipate having about 150 ‘in-person’ participants, we will extend an invitation to delegates who wish to join virtually through the congress live-streaming platform.
The 4WSFC AFRICA is co-hosted by the Institute of Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS), University of Western Cape, South Africa, in partnership with TBTI Global and with support from the African Development Bank and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. We welcome organizations interested in supporting sustainable small-scale fisheries to join as partners to this initiative and help contribute to the development of the congress program and to support the participation of delegates.

CONGRESS REGISTRATION & FEES

1) For in-person participants

âž¡ Discounted registration: USD 100 (for students and fishers). Note that there is a limited number of discounted registrations available and you may need to pay the regular fee.

The registration fee includes access to all sessions (including the visit to Kalk Bay on Sunday Nov 20th), coffee breaks, lunches, and reception.

The congress will be held at the Lagoon Beach Hotel & Spa, 1 Lagoon Gate Drive, Lagoon Beach, Cape Town, 7441, South Africa.
The congress starts with the community event on Sunday, November 20. to celebrate the World Fisheries Day and IYAFA 2022. This is a fisher/community event, which will be held in Hout Bay. The main congress program takes place from November 21-23.

Registered participants can pick up the name badge and the congress program at the Lagoon Beach Hotel & Spa, starting on Monday, November 21st at 8:00. Coffee breaks and lunches will be provided for all three days.
​
PRESENTATION GUIDELINES:
In-person presenters of the contributed papers sessions are asked to email their PowerPoint presentations to 4wsfcongress@gmail.com by Thursday, November 17th. When sending the presentation, please put your name and session number in the subject line. If you are part of plenary or special session, please send your presentation to the session organizers.
Session organizers/chairs & speakers should come to the room where their session will be held 15 minutes before the session start time. A technical host will be there to assist you. While your presentation will already be uploaded to the designated laptop in the room, we recommend the presenters also bring a copy of their presentation on a USB drive. Note that because of the hybrid format, it will not be possible to present from your own laptop.
If you are presenting in a parallel session (i.e., special session or session with contributed papers), please ensure that during you talk, you stand in front of the main laptop (the one connected to the projector) to ensure the online audience can see and hear you.

Disclaimer
​Photos and videos may be taken during the congress, as part of the congress organization. If you do not wish to be photographed, make sure to express this at the time of your registration at the Registration Desk so that we can mark your name badge accordingly. Your name badge must be clearly visible during congress events and sessions.

PRESENTATION GUIDELINES:​
If you are presenting virtually, there is no need to send your PowerPoint presentations to the congress secretariat, unless specified by your session organizers. You will need to log into the congress lobby and join your session 15 minutes before the session start time (using the special ‘panelist’ ticket, which will be sent to you). You will be able to share your screen and present when it is your turn. Instructions on how to access the congress lobby and attend session are posted below.
How to attend sessions virtually?
(1) ENSURE YOU HAVE A TICKET
If you have registered online, you have a ticket, which you secured through your Zoom account. Your ticket confirmation, which was sent to your email, should look similar to the two examples below (check your spam folder if you can't see the message). If you have not received this message, your registration was not successful. In that case, email 4wsfcongress@gmail.com.

(2) ENTER THE CONGRESS LOBBY
Go to Zoom Events (https://events.zoom.us/) and sign into your Zoom Events account using the same login information as when you registered for the congress.

(3) NAVIGATING THE CONGRESS LOBBY
​Once you are in the lobby, you will be able to see the full list of sessions and participate. To do so, click on the 'Session' in the top right menu.

In the session menu, locate the session(s) that you are part of or are interested in. You can also add them to your 'Itinerary' tab by selecting the little flag in the session window.
At the start of the session, the 'join' button in the session window will become clickable - then, simply click on it and enter the session.
If you are a speaker or a chair/moderator, you will be able to enter your session 15 minutes before the session officially starts.

All settings in the congress sessions, including audio and video controls, screen sharing and chat functions as well as other settings are identical to those in regular Zoom Webinars.

Yellow Fever
The yellow fever certificate may be required to enter the Republic of South Africa. Specifically, those journeying from yellow fever risk countries need to show proof of yellow fever vaccination by means of a valid yellow fever certificate. This also applies to those who have transited through a yellow fever risk country.

Currency, weather and other local information
The local currency in South Africa is the South African Rand (ZAR). South Africa has one of the most advanced banking systems and a network of outlets for money transactions, cash withdrawals and forex exchanges. The current exchange rate for the US Dollar is R 17 to USD1. There are various ATM facilities available.
The weather conditions in Cape Town are comfortable temperatures, but windy, with chances of rain. The average temperature fluctuates between 19°C (66°F) and 24°C (75°F). For more information, please visit the South African Weather Service.

2022 International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA)
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2022 the International Year for Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022). IYAFA aims to enhance understanding of, raise awareness, and support the contributions of small-scale and artisanal fisheries and aquaculture to sustainable development around the world; specifically their role in food security, nutrition provision, poverty eradication, and sustainable use of natural resources. IYAFA 2022 also aims to promote sharing and collaboration among small-scale fishers, fishworkers, fishfarmers, and stakeholders to support policy co-development.
The IYAFA Global Action Plan (GAP) promotes inclusive value chains, gender equity and equality, awareness and resilience to climate change and disasters, sustainable use of biodiversity, empowering fishers, building partnerships, and nourishing nations by, with, and for artisanal fisheries and aquaculture. These key messages are the foundation of IYAFA, and will help guide sustainable development in the years to come.
